COURSE TITLE: Web Design- (X)HTML, CSS, Javascript BLOCK/SEMESTER: A/2

988 Independent Study/Research (Grade 11,12) Full semester 1:00 credit. Prerequisite: Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.80; complete the application process; obtain the recommendation of Guidance and the approval of the Principal. All independent studies are automatically ranked at a college preparatory level. Students seeking honors level ranking must receive prior approval from the supervising teacher and the team leaders.

Junior and Senior students with an interest in topics not covered in the Oakmont curriculum may select a special research project or course of study. Students will be required to develop a curriculum with a qualified teacher or mentor who will monitor and evaluate the project or course of study. In order to earn one credit, the project must entail a minimum of 124 hours of documented time; to earn .5 credit, the project must entail 62 hours of documented time. The curriculum must be approved by Guidance and the Principal and must be successfully completed as indicated by the teacher mentor. The student will be required to present the completed project to a committee of administration and faculty. Upon successful presentation to the committee, and teacher/mentor approval, 1.00 credit will be granted (.5 credit for alternate day programs).

Students must submit a curriculum outline approved and signed by the teacher/mentor, the department team leader, the student, and his/her parent.

It is important that both the student and the supervising teacher have a good understanding of what will be accomplished in the Independent Study before it begins. The student and the supervising teacher should discuss the following components and establish a plan for the study. This plan will be the basis of the grading for the course.

This form must be completed and signed by the designated persons before the Independent Study will be approved. An addendum must be filed for any changes in these components. IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE STUDENT TO COMPLETE AND SUBMIT THIS FORM TO HIS/HER GUIDANCE COUNSELOR IN A TIMELY FASHION.

Objectives: What do you plan to accomplish in this study? What do you want to know at its completion? (List at least 4.)

1. -For my Independent Study, I plan on writing a simplistic, but content heavy portfolio webpage.
2. -My goal in this is to create a well designed, advanced page with multiple functions.
3. -To create this portfolio webpage, I plan on using xhtml, css styling script, javascript, and custom templates that I designed to code with.
4. -Besides the design and creation of the portfolio webpage, I plan on following the academic guidelines provided by a book written on the web design, which will be obtained soon. Through this book I will research, complete activities, provide homework for myself, and write evaluation/research papers.
5. -After I am finished with the final webpage product, I hope to have a better understanding of web design and the language structure used to write it.
6. -I will use a 4 term system to work with and set my objectives during the independent study. At the end of every term I will write a paper on what I have accomplished for the term, and I will set goals for myself to accomplish at the beginning of every term.

Resources: What materials will you use to help you achieve your objectives? (Books, videos, people, productions, ect.)

• -Textbook involving examples, explanation, and information on subjects and techniques such as Xhtml, Javascript, CSS style design, and template design/web layouts design.
  
• -Online tutorials involving these topics such as on http://www.w3schools.com/ and http://www.w3.org/
  
• -As for materials that I will use to reach my objectives, I will of course use the computers in the lab, I will use the notepad program to write the source code, and I will work in Adobe Photoshop to create web templates.

Activities: What will you do to achieve your objectives? (Be specific.)

-I plan on breaking up the work for the semester in quadrants: (quadrant 1, quadrant 2 will be first term. Then quadrant 3 and quadrant 4 will be second term.)

• -Term 1
  Quadrant 1: I will work from the book, and use online tutorials to learn the content and perform projects and any other work that is provided to me. I will give myself quizzes and tests, and I will write an evaluation paper at the end of the quadrant.
  Quadrant 2: I will continue to learn the content and work from the book and the internet while performing projects, work, quizzes and tests. However I will begin to apply what I have learned in creating Web Pages using different styles, techniques and layouts. Then at the end of the quadrant I will write another evaluation paper.
  
• -Term 2
  Quadrant 3: Now that I have spent a whole term learning the content, I will fully apply it in the creation of the portfolio Web Page. For the 3rd quadrant I will plan out, design, and decide on the content that will be in the Web Page. This will be my main focus of the 3rd quadrant, however I will continue quizzing and testing myself along with learning from the book and internet, and I will write another evaluation paper at the end of this quadrant.
  Quadrant 4: This is the final quadrant, and by the end of it I need to have a full working Web Portfolio Page as described in my objectives. Therefore the main focus of this quadrant will solely be the completion and design of this web page that I began in the 3rd quadrant. By the end of the quadrant I will write my last evaluation paper which will involve everything I have learned up to this point, what I have done with my time in this independent study, the creation of my final product, and its results.

Final Presentation: At the end of the 4th quadrant I will present all of my work throughout the independent study. I will present and explain all the work I have completed, my test and quiz grades, my projects, and my evaluation papers. The main focus of the presentation however will be my portfolio web page which will pull everything that I have learned and worked on throughout the semester together.

Assessment: What final product(s) will be used to show that you have met your objectives?

-My Portfolio Webpage will be the final product of the independent study, and it will prove everything that I have worked on and learned throughout the semester because the web page cumulates and displays all the work that I have done.
