New site updates (August)

August 2010 UpdatesWell it's been a long time since I've posted anything on my site, maybe too long. But I havn't been completely ignoring it. I've spent maybe an hour or two every few weeks making minor tweaks and such, and of course I always use this site as my own testing ground. The sub directories are a warzone at the moment. Really though, I have been pretty busy. School is right around the corner and I am in the process of finishing up my work at inConcert Web Solutions, Inc. But anyway, I do have a few changes (and a nice new theme) to document here, so lets get to it!

Here's where all the boring stuff is...

Alright, so first I would like to mention the envato advertisements at the bottom of the right sidebar on the homepage. To put it simply, the more clicks I get on those ads, the greater my chance to save money on my tutsplus memebership. I understand advertising is distracting and annoying to visitors, so these links will only display on the homepage and I refuse to change this.

I have also created a 404 page with a built in ajax search feature. I understand that this site has undergone many changes over the past 2 years, so there are bound to be links out there linking to pages that no longer exist. Hopefully in the near future I will implement the search feature on every page on the site, the problem I am facing with that is simply where to put the sidebar. I'm starting to feel that this layout is rather cramped, so who knows, maybe there's a full redesign in the near future ;).

I have also fixed a few bugs, made a couple of styling changes, and changed around my featured items a bit (don't want things to get boring now do we). You can expect there to be a couple of web development and design articles to be posted within the next couple of months. My sites traffick has been dwindling the past few months due to lack of updated content, so that will be my solution to that minor problem.

You may have noticed if you are a frequent visitor to my site that the playground link in the main navigation has been replaced with a client login link. This is because I have created a login system that I will use for my future freelance clients to allow them to view my progress on their projects.

Now for the big news...

So, I have officially completed my first freelance project. I have been working with a private client over the summer and have just recently made the release of his new website, tftyouth.com. This was a long and very time consuming project. The site features not only a standalone informational site, but a student registration and proprietary login area with private chatrooms for the students to use, a religious wordpress blog, and a fully functioning magento book store. I have added the design and link to my portfolio and my featured items list.

New wordpress theme on the way...

So I have begun development on what will be my first wordpress blog theme release. The theme will be free to the public via download on this site and on wordpress.org. I have put about 10-15 hours into this design, and have tried to capture that sleek, clean web 2.0 feel in it. I am still deciding as to whether or not I will write up a tutorial on how this design was made. If I do so, I will be sure to write a followup tutorial on the programming process of the theme. As always, my work is available as a free download to whoever wants to take a peek. I learned by looking at the work that was provided to me through the generosity of other web designers, and who am I to not return this favor? Oh by the way, the theme is titled "Break the Network", which is a site idea me and a friend have been developing for a little while now.
